Arizona Constitution (1 credit, 3 workshops)
This course is designed to provide an overview of Arizona History and its
Constitution form territorial days to the present. HIS 501 -
United States Constitution (1 credit, 3 workshops)
This course provides a brief history establishing a foundation of understanding
the U.S. Constitution. An actual study of the U.S. Constitution takes place.
SEI 501 -
Structured English Immersion
This course will introduce students to the concept of and methods for
instructing in a Structured English Immersion (SEI) environment. Students will
learn about assessment of K-12 students, state standards, research-based
instructional activities, and lesson planning and implementation models.
Students will study how a learner-centered approach to teaching can provide
English Language Learners (ELL), as well as native English speakers, with a
greater opportunity to interact meaningfully with educational materials as they
learn subject matter and EL Learners acquire English.
SEI 510 (0 credits, AZ specific) -
Structured English Immersion Introduction
This course will introduce participants to effective teaching strategies
utilized in a Structured English Immersion (SEI) environment. Participants will
learn about the legal and historical reasons for SEI, the identification and
assessment of ELLs, ELL Proficiency Standards, research-based instructional
activities, effective lesson planning, and implementation models. Participants
will discuss and apply learner-centered teaching approaches and strategies with
corresponding benefits for ELLs and native English speakers. This course has
been designed specifically for teachers, administrators, and other certified
staff so that they can effectively teach and serve ELLs. Further, the SIOP model
itself provides administrators with an evaluation tool for ELL educators.

SPAN 502 -
Spanish for Educators, Part I
This course focuses on the acquisition of conversational Spanish for teachers
and educators. It emphasizes the development of domain-specific communicative
skills for educators so they can effectively educate their Spanish-speaking
students and include those students’ parents in the learning process. The course
is taught entirely in Spanish, incorporating practical applications, role plays,
dialogues, and audio-visuals that educators can use in their classrooms.
Participants also analyze the sociolinguistic aspect of the Spanish language to
improve their understanding of cultural norms and differences.
SPAN 503 -
Spanish for Educators, Part II
The course focuses on the improvement of conversational Spanish for teachers and
educators. It continues the development of domain-specific communicative skills
for educators, using language in context with practical applications, role
plays, dialogues, and audio-visuals that educators can use in their classrooms.
Participants also integrate the sociolinguistic aspect into their understanding
of the Spanish language to deepen their comprehension of cultural norms and
their awareness of the sociopolitical concerns and obstacles experienced by
Hispanic communities living in Arizona. |
