ADM 560 Ethics In Education

Course Description

This course will examine the ethical principles of an administrator in the educational setting. Students will develop and refine the skills necessary to analyze and integrate constructive ethics into practices that lead to success. Emphasis is placed on the ways ethics affect thinking, decision making, professional conduct, and learning.

Topics and Objectives

The Need for Ethics

· Examine the need for ethics in education.

· Define the concept of ethics.

· Compare and contrast ethics, morals, values, and virtues.

· Analyze the National Education Association (NEA) and American Association of School Administrators (AASA) codes of ethics.

Ethics Development

· Examine the role of majority view.

· Examine the role of feelings and conscience in ethics.

· Analyze Kohlberg's stages of moral reasoning.

Basic Criteria in Analyzing Ethical Issues

· Define the steps in analyzing ethical issues.

· Examine errors to avoid.

· Examine obligations, moral ideals, and consequences.

History of Ethics

· Examine the Classical Period, Medieval Period, and Modern Period.

· Define Deontology, Teleology, and Utilitarianism.

Current Ethical Controversies

· Examine the importance of teaching character education.

· Analyze current ethical controversies in education.
