MAT 548 Curriculum Constructs and Assessment: Secondary Science

Course Description

This course is designed to prepare students to teach science at the secondary school level. To meet this objective, students will explore the instructional methods in science content areas in middle level and high school settings. Participants will identify the educational needs of secondary students by exploring current instructional theory; national, state, and local standards; and social issues that impact the science classroom. The course also helps prospective educators develop skills in selecting and adapting instruction and management plans for diverse student populations.

Topics and Objectives

The Nature of Science Education

· Define science as an academic discipline.

· Review the history of science education in the United States.

· Analyze resources available in science such as journals, Internet, text and trade books, library resources, and recent research in science education.

· Examine national and state science standards.

Instructional Methods for the Science Teacher

· Describe the role and function of a science teacher.

· Investigate and evaluate various instructional strategies in science education.

· Develop demonstrations and inquiry activities for students to use in a science classroom and/or lab setting.

· Describe adolescent development and how it impacts lesson design and instructional strategies.

· Investigate innovative instructional methods and materials.

Planning Science Lessons

· Identify the components of a science unit.

· Analyze the elements of an effective lesson plan or unit, including assessment.

· Utilize state and national standards for lesson planning and unit development.

· Analyze the effects of national and state standards on science curriculum.

Teaching Strategies and Classroom Management

· Identify the elements necessary for a safe science laboratory and classroom.

· Prepare students for laboratory and field work.

· Summarize the strategies for effective management in the science classroom.

· Evaluate inclusion strategies for diverse learners in the science classroom.

· Examine the use of computers and other technology in science instruction.

Assessment in Science Education

· Identify various strategies for assessing learning outcomes.
