MED 500 Methods of Teaching Elementary Language Arts
Course Description
In this course, students are provided with the opportunity to understand and explore the theories, models, and strategies for teaching and learning the components of the language arts program for elementary school. Students are provided with the opportunity to acquire knowledge and to apply strategies for teaching reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and visual representing.

· Examine the aspects of learning and children's language acquisition.
· Analyze the implications of language learning and culture.
· Examine how children learn language arts.
Expressive Language Arts: Talk in the Classroom
· Examine the purpose of effective speaking.
· Apply and assess strategies for aesthetic, efferent, and dramatic speaking.
Receptive Language Arts: Listening to Learn
· Examine the purpose and process of effective listening.
· Apply and assess strategies for aesthetic, efferent, and critical listening.
Receptive Language Arts: Reading
· Identify the reading process and multiple approaches to teaching reading.
· Analyze elements of reading instruction.
· Analyze methods for assessing student reading.
Expressive Language Arts: Writing
· Describe the stages of the writing process.
· Examine the application of the writing process in the elementary classroom.
· Evaluate appropriate methods of assessing student writing.
· Examine how to integrate grammar, spelling, and handwriting into the writing process.
Integrating the Language Arts
· Examine factors that influence curriculum integration.
