MED 509 Methods Of Teaching Elementary Science

Course Description

The purpose of this course is to focus on the development of a balanced and articulated elementary school science program. An evaluation of texts and reference materials, development of hands-on activities, and the use of teacher-made and commercial equipment are among the topics discussed.

Topics and Objectives

Science Content and Process Standards

· Identify the specific content and process standards in P-8 science.

· Apply national and local science standards to instruction and assessment.

· Analyze various reform efforts used to promote scientific literacy.

Constructivist Learning and Science Pedagogy

· Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship among child development, attitudes about science, and science education.

· Demonstrate concept mapping techniques.

· Demonstrate an understanding of how children learn science using a constructivist model.

· Identify the components of a lesson plan and science unit.

· Adapt science instruction to accommodate diverse learners.

· Demonstrate an understanding of effective questioning techniques.

· Use appropriate cooperative learning strategies in science instruction.

Science Assessment

· Analyze assessment techniques, tools, and strategies used to evaluate student learning in science.
